As we saw, the new "Best Of Three" format proved a hit. But, two whole rounds were played that day and an extra five minutes had to be appropriated at the end of the meeting to allow the last match to be played. There was no room for The Friendly Cup nor time for any doubles. Some stats are shown below.
First, though, a quick note on definitions:
A game: Player A v Player B, to 21 points ( or beyond)
A match: Player A v Player B in their Best Of Three
A round: All players complete six matches.
7th May Stats
42 matches were played.
That's two rounds of 21 matches.
Only 12 of the 42 matches went to three games. (e.g. Greg 2 v 4 Rob)
So, we got squeezed for time on a day when only 28.5% of matches actually went to three games.

You can see the potential problem. Your TBL blog makes this suggestion: future meetings consist of only one round of league games, the remainder of the time available given to the other activities.

I can see your concern about the potential time constraints but overall feel fairly confident that the two hours should normally accommodate the same amount of games as was played last week. the game that was played in extra time between myself and viv could actually have been played sooner but we hadnt realised we had a match still to play and were in fact sitting on the sidelines discussing the pros and cons of the pendulum serve.
ReplyDeleteOn a separate note, I would say this with regards to doubles. As much as I enjoy our usual quick fix of tag team table tennis, without one extra player to give us an even number, a doubles league table in which permanent teams compete throughout the season, simply cannot exist. Do we then still attribute some time for a few friendly games each week that detracts from the much more competitive and heated singles fixtures? I'm open to discussion on that.
the friendly cup was always something I looked forward to but maybe with said time constraints, we only have a cup competition every 3 or 4 weeks with each player seeded by their current league position? just a though.
Lightning out.
Thanks for the input, Chris. You're right about the problem with a doubles league. And I like your idea of an occasional, seeded, cup tourney.

ReplyDeleteThe time issue remains a live one, however. If even just 33% of matches go to three games, we'll get humped for time and face a backlog the next week. I'm certain the number of 3-game matches will increase as Viv and Mark get into their stride. Two backlogs in consecutive weeks could affect the scheduled date of your suggested Cup Tourney. (Bukachenko sees backlog as a metaphor for chaos).
ReplyDeletewell I am not one to question Bukachenko's wisdom. hopefully we shall have a better idea of any potential chnages that need to be made after our next meet
ReplyDeleteI have to agree with Thunder. The thought of losing a game without getting a chance to redeem yourself, and might I add, answer critics,is too much for this reigning champion. In the past I have never played on the fact I was reigning champion but as the reigning champion I would hope my opinion would carry some gravitas. Quick Wrists Little RC (reigning champion)
